The seventh meeting of Women Speakers on Gender Sensitive Parliaments concluded today in New Delhi by adopting an Outcome Document. This document recognizes the vital role of women speakers in spearheading the movement for establishing gender senstive parliaments and society. Speaking to media persons, the Lok Sabha Speaker Miera Kumar said, the resoution in the Outcome Document will be put before the Inter Parliamentary Union, IPU conference to be held later this month.
She said discussions were held on every aspect of gender senstivity in Parliaments including capacity building of Parliaments and specific role of speakers to address gender issues. She said creating a gender sensitive parliamentary environment and work modalities and infrastructure were also discussed in the two day meet.
President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Abdelwahad Radi, said he firmly believed that through women's participation society could be transformed in general and institutions of governance in particular in order to achieve greater equality and equity.

In Chhattisgarh, a district and session court of today convicted a retired IAS officer M K Sarthi on the charges of rape and sentenced him for seven years rigorous imprisonment. This IAS officer
was accused of sexually exploiting an anganwadi supervisor during his tenure in Jashpur as collector in 2001.

n Maharashtra, registration of 17 abortion centres in Thane has been cancelled with spate of female foeticide cases coming to light. The Health Department cancelled the licences for non-adherence to regulations. The action is being taken under the provisions of the PCPNDT Act of 1994.
District Health Department said today that a detailed report has been sent to the state government on action taken against these abortion centres.
During the last one year, 553 abortion centres were inspected. Of them, 105 were found to be flouting rules and show cause notices had been sent to them.
The report said, a total of 174 sonography centres were also inspected during the period. 13 of them were found with irregularities and these had been sealed.

he West Bengal cabinet has decided to accord 10 percent reservation of posts in Kolkata Police for Women . The cabinet which was chaired by the Chief Minister Miss Mamata Bnerjee in Kolkata this afternoon also decided to setup four new Police Stations at Belur, Nischinda, Dasnagar and Santragachi in Howrah District bifurcating the Bally and Jagacha Police Stations.
Broadcasting Content Complaints Council BCCC has asked TV channels to be extra-cautious while showing violence against women. The non-news television industry's self-regulatory body, BCCC has received almost half of the complaints related to obscene scenes during its first year of functioning.
In its report sent to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the council has said that during the period from 20th of June 2011 till 2 nd of last month, out of the 717 specific complaints received, 47 per cent were on obscenity and nudity while 16 per cent were regarding depiction of violence.
The BCCC directed some channels that since these programmes were not suitable for telecast during generalviewing hours, they should suitably modify the content and air such programmes during restricted viewing hours. It added that in some cases, channels completely took programmes off air.The BCCC report said that it had also received complaints about reality shows that involved youth. The main concern was use of vulgar language by participants and the alleged obscene acts performed by them during the shows.

Goa government's flagship programmes-Ladli Laxmi Scheme is likely to benefit over 9,000 girls annually. The State government has made a provision of 150 crores rupees for running the scheme during the current financial year.

Under the scheme, the state government will deposit an amount of Rs. one lakh in girls account in a selected bank and make the same available to her with interest at the time of marriage. The scheme will be implemented through Department of women and child Development.

Mr.Kulandai Francis who has been awarded with Magsaysay says, working with the objective of eradicating poverty and empowering more than one lakh rural women for 35 long years has got him award. Talking to AIR News, he said that he did not expect to get the prestigious award.
Reeling in poverty during childhood days in Salem, Mr. Francis had to struggle hard to get a basic education. The only land which the family had to be sold in order to get him a graduate education. The inspiration to work for the upliftment and empowerment came to him when he was involved in relief work during the Bangladeshi war and also during drought in Pune in 1972.
His organisation, the Integrated Village Development Project provides training to rural students and also in enhancing their skills namely training in rural sanitation,accountancy,management, giving educational assistance for students in high schools, scholarships and also computer skills. The visionary Mr. Francis was also successful in pursuing the holistic economic empowerment of thousands of women and their families. His organisation has built science labs, computer labs, solar lamps in schools situated in many backward areas of Krishnagiri district.
Through more than 8500 self help groups, the organisation has encouraged savings and credit activities among the economically backward. They were able to build atleast 300 check dams in the region to save water for irrigation and drinking purposes.HIV testing for pregnant women, setting up of non formal schools for child labourers, providing sanitation facilities in the tribal areas are also part of the yeoman service rendered by the Integrated Village Development Program founded by Mr. Kulandai Francis.
He says that living in poverty is terrible and wants to fulfil his obejctive of wiping out poverty from the Country.

An Indian Army team of ten climbers has climbed the highest peak Mount Everest today .The team included four female officers and six male soldiers who reached the summit of around 4am .
The four female officers are Captain Namrata Rathore, Major N. Linyu. Captain Deepika Rathore and Captain Smitha . Major R. S. Jamwal (deputy leader,) of the team. Subedar Rajender Jalal, Havaldar Sherab Palden, Havaldar Praveen Thapa, Havaldar Chader Bahadur Thapa and Sudhir Singh were amongst the other male members who successfully scaled the peak.
According to press release , a second team of Indian Army Women’s Everest Expedition consisting of three women officers and five men will make an attempt on the summit on tomorrow .

The government today ruled out any proposal for giving reservation to women in services. The response came in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha whether the government proposed to fix quota for women in services to ensure their proper representation. The reply was given by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. V. Narayanasamy.
Assam Government will launch Infant and Young Child Nutrition, IYCN, programme to reduce malnutrition and anemia by early next month. Official sources said that, it will be carried out at Lahowal Block in Dibrugarh and Sipajahr Block in Darrang district on pilot basis under Chief Minister Vision for Women and Children 2016 programme. National Rural Health Mission, Social Welfare, Education Department and UNICEF will jointly implement the programme. It may be recalled that the main aim of Infant and Young Child Nutrition programme is to achieve Continuum of Care for children under two along with improve nutritional status and reduce anemia among adolescents and pregnant women. Continuum of care includes the care covering for stages starting form adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers and children less than 5 years of age. Assam has recorded 35 percent underweight birth and 72 pregnant women as anemic. Another objective of the programme is to achieve 100 percent exclusive breast feeding which is presently 63 percent. Under the program, IFA supplement, nutrition education and counseling, quality ante-natal care, Vitamin -A will be given to children, adolescents and pregnant women.
Expressing concern over increasing cases of women trafficking, the President of National Commission for Women, Mamta Sharma said that it should be stopped. Talking to reporters in Bhopal on Sunday, Ms. Sharma said that a number of cases of women trafficking have come to the fore in Jharkhand and tribal belts of Madhya Pradesh. She said that the Commission is in touch with the police of the states in this connection. Mrs. Sharma said that atrocities against women can not be stopped without changing the mentality of the people. She said that the politicians, police and media will have to play an important role in this direction.
A new report by Human Rights Watch says more than 400 women in Afghanistan are in jail for trying to escape abusive husbands and forced marriages. The report said the women who seek to run away from such misery are frequently accused of adultery and imprisoned for moral crimes, while their abusers walk free.
