Wheat procurement has crossed 38 million tonnes in the current marketing year so far as the government's wheat purchase drive is coming to close in most of the growing states. According to the official data, maximum 12.8 million tonnes of wheat has been procured from Punjab followed by Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The quantity of the grain procured as of now is much higher than the targeted 31.8 million tonnes for the current year. In the same period last year, the government had purchased only 28 million tonnes of wheat.

Wheat procurement has gone up substantially. It crossed 3 crore 70 lakh tonnes mark in this rabi marketing season so far. An official release says, this is one crore tonnes more than the procurement made by this day last year. Punjab led the states with the procurement figure touching more than one crore tonnes, followed by Haryana with more than 86 lakh tonnes.
