India and Bangladesh have agreed to extend the Inland Water Transit and Trade protocol between the two countries for two more years making it effective till March 31 2014. This was decided during the discussions held during the Shipping Secretary level talks held between the two countries in Dhaka. Union Shipping Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha led the eight member delegation from India while the Bangladesh delegation was led by the country's Shipping Secretary Abdul Mannan Howlader during the talks which began on Monday.Talking to reporters in Dhaka today after the two Secretaries signed the agreed minutes of the meeting, Bangladesh's Shipping Secretary Abdul Mannan Howlader said, India has also agreed to pay an increased maintenance fees of Ten crore Taka for the river routes inside Bangladesh in place of the present amount of 5.5 crore taka. Union Shipping Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha said officials of both sides will study and examine Bangladesh's proposal for a coastal shipping arrangement between the two countries. Mr.Sinha also added that India would also conduct a feasibility study or the project related to the construction of an inland container depot at the Ashuganj port in Bangladesh.
