n Uttar Pradesh, 23 special courts have been set up in 5 different districts and all divisional headquarters for quick disposal of cases related with economic offences and food security and adulteration in food grains and spurious medicines.
Quoting official sources our Allahabad correspondent reports that the state law department has set up special courts at Lucknow, Agra, Varanasi, Bareilly and Meerut district for taking up cases related with economic offences. Similarly special courts have been set up at all 18 divisional headquarters for hearing of cases related with Food and Drug Authority of the state.

 The government will further streamline the procedures for conducting clinical trials of drugs in the country. It will also set up an Experts Committee to analyze the cause of injury or death and recommend compensation to victims of trial-related deaths.

This was stated by the Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad in his reply to a Calling Attention motion on the situation arising out casualties during clinical trials of the drugs in the Rajya Sabha today.

The statement was laid on the table of the House by the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Mr Sudip Bandyopadhyay amidst noisy scenes by the BJP members on coal blocks allocation issue. It said the government also proposes to incorporate certain new provisions in the rules for clinical trials.

The statement said the proposed Committee of Experts would give its recommendations for compensation in case of injury or death during clinical trials to the Drug Controller of India (DCGI), which will decide the final amount within three months. The sponsor will provide medical care to the person concerned as long as required.

he Supreme Court today expressed concern over alleged illegal clinical trial of drugs in the country. A Bench headed by Justice R M Lodha criticised the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government for not filing their response on PILs alleging large-scale illegal drug trials in the state and other parts of the country. The Bench granted the government and Medical Council of India eight weeks time to file their replies. The Bench was hearing two PILs filed by a group of doctors and an NGO alleging that illegal and unethical clinical trials were being done by multinational corporations on poor persons, including juveniles, tribals and dalits. The petitioners had also urged the court to order formation of a Committee of Experts, consisting of members of civil society, especially, the All India Drug Action Network to examine the present legal provisions concerning clinical trials, both in India and abroad.
