India Open Badminton tournament has begun at the Sirifort Complex in the national capital, today. Apart from ace shuttlers like Saina Nehwal, Ajay Jayaram, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, more than 50 Indian shuttlers are participating in the 5-day long Super Series event, qualifying round of which is being played today. Top shot Indian shuttlers have been given a main draw berth, while many young shuttlers are playing the Qualification round to find a place in the main draw event.
Meanwhile, promising Indian shuttlers Guru Sai Datt and Saurabh Verma were yesterday promoted to the main draw of the championship, after 12 players withdrew from the men's singles event. Four other Indians - Sumit Reddy, Rohit Yadav, Nand Gopal Srikanth, K Srikant - were promoted from reserve to qualifiers of the men's singles. Top Indians Chetan Anand and Arvid Bhat were among the 12 players who had withdrawn from the men's singles.
In women's singles, Mohita Sachdeva and Tripti Murkunde were also promoted from reserve to qualifiers after withdrawal of players.
In men's doubles, the Indian pairs of B Sumit Reddy and T Heman Nagendra Babu and Beneth Anthony and P H Suraj were promoted from the qualifiers to the main draw.

In the Men's Singles final of Montecarlo Masters Tennis Tournament, seven times champion Rafal Nadal of Spain defeated the top seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1. Earlier, the second seeded Nadal defeated nine seeded Simon Zailus of France in the straight sets 6-3 and 6-4 in the semi-finals. Djokovic defeated six seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In the Doubles finals, the pair of top seeded Bob and Mike Briyan brothers of the US will clash with the duo of Max Mirnoe of Belarus and Danial Nestor of Canada. The duo of Leander Paes and fifth seeded Radak Stapanik of the Czech Republic were defeated in the quarter finals on Saturday

Soumyajit Ghosh and Ankita Das have booked their London Olympics berths on Sunday in the Asian Olympic Qualifying Table Tennis Tournament in Hong Kong, but it was heartbreak for top paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal. For both Ghosh and Ankita, the berths came via the continental quotas, after they topped from the South Asian region.
