Ghana goes to the polls today to elect a new President and Parliament. Observers are expecting a tight race between the two main candidates - the incumbent President John Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo. John Mahama has promised to improve the living standard of the people. His main challenger Mr Akufo Addo, a keen supporter of the free market economy, has pledged to use the oil wealth for education.

Ghana President John Atta Mills, who was suffering from throat cancer, has died in a hospital in capital Accra.
A statement from his office said the 68-year-old died a few hours after being taken ill. He, however, did not give details. Atta Mills died on Tuesday afternoon while receiving treatment, his office said. 

Atta Mills has ruled the West African country since 2009. John Dramani Mahama, his Vice-President, has been sworn in as President at a ceremony in the capital. This is the first time that a President has died while in office in Ghana.
