An Australian team of scientists including an Indian-origin researcher has developed a graphene coating invisible to the human eye that can make copper nearly 100 times more resistant to corrosion. Researchers from the Monash University and Rice University in the US believe their find could mean paradigm changes in the development of anti-corrosion coatings using extremely thin graphene films.
Graphene is a microscopically thin layer of carbon atoms. It is already in use in such things as smartphone screens, and is attracting research attention for its possibilities as a means of increasing metal's resistance to corrosion. Dr Parama Banerjee, who performed most of the experiments for this study, said graphene had excellent mechanical properties and great strength.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched India's first High quality Video Call Office (VCO) in Ahmedabad.
With this launch, the BSNL has become the first Telecom Service Provider in the country to take such an initiative to offer high quality Video calling service to the common man.
After launching the new BSNL initiative, Sam Pitroda, Advisor to The Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations, said this is an unique initiative which can bridge the gap between Urban and Rural India. He said this will be a platform for growth as this network is ideal for applications like Job interviews, Tele-medicine, Tele-education .
Mr. Pitroda said this service can bring people face to face with many other cities and towns without travel.

The beverage, made from toasted(भूनना) holly leaves and stems, was six times more potent than coffee. "This finding brings to us a whole wide spectrum of religious and symbolic behaviour at Cahokia that we could only speculate about in the past," director of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey Dr Thomas Emerson said. Researchers tested pottery beakers found in and around Cahokia for residues of 'Black Drink' because the vessels were different and relatively rare.
It could have been created for special ceremonies and is the first known evidence of a tea-like drink in what is now the US. A study of residues absorbed into eight porous, unglazed mugs found traces of theobromine, caffeine and ursolic acid which provided a chemical signature of the holly species Ilex.
The unique vessels with a handle on one side, a tiny lip on the other and carved with symbols of water and the underworld date to about 1050 to 1250 AD. Cahokia was a city with as many as 100,000 residents in its heyday - the largest prehistoric North American settlement north of Mexico.

The United States today launched a 20 million dollar clean energy development programme in New Delhi. The objective of the programme is to help India's transition to a high performing, low emissions and energy secure economy. The programme was launched by the US Ambassador to India, Nancy J. Powell.
It will be implemented in five years and will create an environment that strengthens institutions and increases the availability of innovative financing mechanisms. The programme will also enhance local capacity to propagate clean energy solutions.

Mr.Kulandai Francis who has been awarded with Magsaysay says, working with the objective of eradicating poverty and empowering more than one lakh rural women for 35 long years has got him award. Talking to AIR News, he said that he did not expect to get the prestigious award.
Reeling in poverty during childhood days in Salem, Mr. Francis had to struggle hard to get a basic education. The only land which the family had to be sold in order to get him a graduate education. The inspiration to work for the upliftment and empowerment came to him when he was involved in relief work during the Bangladeshi war and also during drought in Pune in 1972.
His organisation, the Integrated Village Development Project provides training to rural students and also in enhancing their skills namely training in rural sanitation,accountancy,management, giving educational assistance for students in high schools, scholarships and also computer skills. The visionary Mr. Francis was also successful in pursuing the holistic economic empowerment of thousands of women and their families. His organisation has built science labs, computer labs, solar lamps in schools situated in many backward areas of Krishnagiri district.
Through more than 8500 self help groups, the organisation has encouraged savings and credit activities among the economically backward. They were able to build atleast 300 check dams in the region to save water for irrigation and drinking purposes.HIV testing for pregnant women, setting up of non formal schools for child labourers, providing sanitation facilities in the tribal areas are also part of the yeoman service rendered by the Integrated Village Development Program founded by Mr. Kulandai Francis.

President Pratibha Patil today awarded first prize to 15-year-old Robin Singh for his Logo design at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi today. The function was organised to award the winners of a logo design competition of the Rashtrapati Bhavan's green initiative 'Roshni' on World Environment Day.
The drawing of Robin Singh, a student of Kendrya Vidyalaya BSF school in North Kashmir's Bandipore district, was adjudged the winner among 3,276 entries. Hailed from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh Robin Singh was given a certificate and 10,000 rupees in cash.
Nine-year-old Vibhu Prakash, a class 4 student of Air Force School,Panchavati, Delhi Cantonment, received the
Special Encouragement Prize comprising a certificate and 5000 rupees in cash.
AIR correspondent adds that `Roshni' is a green innovation concept encompassing environment management and empowerment of local communities to create eco-friendly sustainable urban habitats through participation of stakeholders and convergence of partnership programmes.
The award was initiated by the President on July 25, 2008 and the programme aims to make the President's Estate a green, energy efficient and zero waste model township for all other habitats across India.
President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil will unveil a logo for the Roshini initiative- a green innovation for sustainable urban habitats, tomorrow at Rastrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Mrs Patil will select a winning logo from more than three thousand entries submitted by students across the country.
The President will announce the winner out of these entries. The Roshni logo competition is with an aim to universalize the concept of Roshni and to sensitize students towards sustainability, preservation and conservation of green habitats.
Our correspondent reports that an exhibition of countrywide entries from students for a logo for Roshni is also being organised at President's estate. The exhibition will be open for the general public from tomorrow to second of next month. A total of 455 school responded with more than four thousand registrations and 3276 are the final entries which are on the display in this exhibition.

breakthrough which scientists say could replace the frequent skin prick tests used to monitor blood sugar levels of diabetic patients. This newly developed contact lens has been developed by a team of scientists at the University of Akron in Ohio. The contact lens can
sense glucose, which is the blood sugar in tears, and reveal the information in the blink of an eye.
The researcher said ,if glucose concentration builds up in the body and sugar is not being metabolised properly in the body, the contact lens will detect a problem and change colour. Dr Jun Hu who led the study, said, the contact lens works just like pH paper in your high school chemistry lab. The lens is currently at the prototype phase but the team hoped if all goes
well, it could be commercially available within three years.

Seven young scientists from India have been selected for the Intel world high school science research competition, which began in the US' Pittsburgh this week.
Sources in Intel said, 1,549 young scientists from around the world were vying for the top award, that carries a 75,000 US Dollars grand prize from the Intel Foundation. The award ceremony will take place on Friday.
The scientists have been selected through 446 affiliate fairs in 68 countries, regions and territories.
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), a programme of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), is sponsored by software company Intel.
The Indian contingent is a mix of students from Delhi, Chennai, Ujjain, Puttur and Kolkata with innovations in the field of chemistry, maths, bio-physics, bio-chemistry among others.
Nuclear Fuel Complex on Monday flagged off the first batch of indigenously manufactured high standard Steam Generator Tubes for Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors. The Hyderabad based NFC has manufactured these high standard Nickel Alloy tubes for the first time in India and supplied to Larson and Toubro to use in Steam Generators that it is manufacturing for 700 MW electric Heavy Water Reactors. By making 1.1 millimeters thick and 27 meter long U-bend tubes, India has become fourth country in the world to manufacture this critical component for building Steam Generators for Nuclear power Plants.
Speaking on the occasion, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited Chairman S K Jain said about 20 nuclear power units are coming up at a cost of 2 lakh 50 thousand crore rupees during the 12th plan period and 4 are already under construction. He said the Uranium production has gone up by 25 percent after mining started at Tummalapalli in Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh. On Koodunkulam plant, Mr Jain said round the work is in progress round the clock in three shifts.
The Minister for Railways Mr. Mukul Roy The Minister also said that, passenger, security, safety and punctuality would be given utmost stress .
