The President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has said that electoral reforms are absolutely necessary to maintain the country’s secular and democratic character. In an interview with a leading daily published on Sunday, she said education, empowering women and focus on moral values should at the heart of the reforms.
Stating that the country has been conducting elections very well, President Patil emphasised the need to keep the elements of money and muscle out. She said reforms should be brought in to remove the impurities that have crept into the system.
To maintain the secular fabric of the world's largest democracy, Mrs. Patil said, different stakeholders need to work with a deep sense of responsibility for a clean and healthy democracy.
