Religion doesn’t come in the way of owning the legacy of the holy scriptures. A United Arab Emirates Christian owns the world's smallest Quran. The holy book in his possession measures just 5.1cm in length and 8cm in width. It comprises 550 pages and is estimated to be about 400 years old.

The proud owner is Muhannad Ameel Issa, who inherited the holy text from his ancestors. Issa told Al Jazeera newspaper that it was found near Al Quds in Jerusalem. Ameel brought the copy with him to the UAE in 1989. He has no intention of selling the Holy book.

Two years ago, Fathima Beevi, a native of Kerala’s Alappuzha district, enrolled as a student and attended school for six months. She gained a fourth class equivalent certificate and also earned herself a higher honour at 92. She became one of the oldest school students in Kerala. Beevi had attended school as a child but an orthodox community spoiled her dreams of literacy. The ailing grandmother’s day to return to school came two years ago when literacy workers spoke to her about the state government’s education programme for adults and primary school dropouts. On March 31, this year, Beevi passed away while preparing for her seventh standard equivalent exam. She has been an inspiration for others as well as a boost for the state’s initiative.
