ll parametres on India's Advanced Communication Satellite, GSAT 10, are functioning normally. The satellite will take about another four days to reach its Geo Synchronous orbit and will be operational by November this year.

GSAT-10 was successfully launched early yesterday on board Ariane-5 rocket from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana. It has a design life of 15 years. It will augment telecommunication, Direct-To-Home and radio navigation services. It was ISRO's 101st space mission. It is fitted with 30 transponders, 12 Ku-band, 12 C-band and six Extended C-Band, which will provide vital augmentation to INSAT and GSAT transponder capacity.



I am delighted at having witnessed today’s launch of India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle – C21, carrying two foreign satellites. On behalf of all fellow Indians, I warmly congratulate the Department of Space and all members of the Indian Space Research Organisation fraternity for this spectacular success. As ISRO’s 100th space mission, today’s launch is a milestone in our nation’s space capabilities.

I would also like to congratulate EADS Astrium of France and Osaka Institute of Technology of Japan for the successful launch of their satellites. The launch of these satellites on board an Indian launch vehicle is testimony to the commercial competitiveness of the Indian space industry and is a tribute to Indian innovation and ingenuity. the power of creative imagination 

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the commencement of our space programme. I am also happy to see here today many stalwarts of our space programme in its earlier years, including the Project Directors of our initial space missions. Given the string of successes since then, we often forget how challenging space technology is and what a relatively new field it continues to be. India is justly proud of its space scientists, who have overcome immense odds to set up world class facilities and develop advanced technologies. We owe a great deal to pioneers like Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and Prof. Satish Dhawan. I remember working closely with Prof. Dhawan when I was a Member of the Space Commission in the late 1970s, and I am privileged to have had this long association with our space endeavours. It is befitting that this new state-of-the-art mission control centre has been named after Prof. Satish Dhawan.

Questions are sometimes asked about whether a poor country like India can afford a space programme and whether the funds spent on space exploration, albeit modest, could be better utilized elsewhere. This misses the point that a nation’s state of development is finally a product of its technological prowess. The founding fathers of our space programme faced a similar dilemma, but they persevered in pursuing their vision. When we look at the enormous societal and national benefits that have been generated in diverse fields, there can be no doubt that they were right. Equally, I have no doubt that ISRO will build on these glorious traditions and scale still greater heights.

The ISRO community has always been a source of inspiration to our country through its quest for the stars. I wish all of you the very best as you continue the journey to push the boundaries of science and technology, and reap its benefits for society and for accelerated social and economic development of our great country.

Addressing the Nation after the successful launch, Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh congratulated ISRO scientists and said, the historic launch is a testimony for the commercial competitiveness of the Indian Space Program.

He thanked them for setting up world class facility and creating a milestone in Indian innovation in the 50th year of Indian space science.

Praising scientists for the hardwork, sincerity and dedication, Prime Minister said that ISRO has set a glorious tradition and has achieved greater heights. 

Dr. Manmohan Singh remembered working with Prof Satish Dhawan and his long association with ISRO.

 The Launch Authorisation Board of ISRO has permitted commencement of the countdown for the launch of PSLV-C21. The launch vehicle carries French Satellite SPOT-6 and Japanese Satellite PROITERES. This will be the 100th mission of Indian Space Research Organisation which will be witnessed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Sunday, September 9th.

India has launched 27 foreign satellites from space station Sriharikota till now, excluding the two being launched now. An ISRO release says that propellant-filling operations of the liquid propellant second stage and fourth stage of the launch vehicle will be carried out during the Countdown. Besides, mandatory checks on the launch vehicle and spacecraft will be carried out. In addition, charging of batteries and pressurisation of propellant tanks onboard the satellite will be performed.

Readiness of various ground systems such as tracking radar systems and communication networks will also be ascertained. A PSLV-C21 launch vehicle will inject SPOT-6 and PROITERES satellites into an orbit of 655 km altitude at an inclination of 98.23 degrees.


The Railways have got the much-awaited clearance from space agency ISRO for using the satellite for surfing the Internet in trains without using data card. A senior Railway Ministry official said, the Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO has given the clearance for using the frequency from KU band for using the satellite for Internet. It will be for the first time that Internet will be operational in moving trains through satellite.

Though Railways had proposed two years back to provide Internet in trains, the project could not take off for the want of ISRO clearance. As per the proposal, three rakes of Howrah Rajdhani will be uplinked with satellite for facilitating Internet in coaches on a piloti bass. Since it is a pilot project, the Internet service will not be charged from the passengers.

Railways have sanctioned 6.30 crore rupees for providing Internet facility in Howrah Rajdhani. Now custom-made antenna will be installed on the locomotives of the train and coaches will be linked through Wi-Fi connectivity. 

To make the Internet operational, the passenger will get a password in his mobile phone after dialling a number given by the TTE.

The countdown has commenced for the launch of PSLV-C19 launch vehicle carrying India's first Radar Imaging Satellite called RISAT-1. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, started the 71 hour countdown at 6.47 am today. An Indian Space Research Organisation release says that the launch will be on the 26th of this month at 5.45 am. During the Countdown, propellant-filling operations of the liquid propellant second stage and fourth stage of the launch vehicle will be carried out.

The ISRO sources said that RISAT 1 satellite, fitted with Synthetic Aperture Radar, can take pictures of the earth at all times, through rain, sun, clouds, fog and cyclones. The pictures from RISAT-1 would be used to estimate the crop yields. The satellite's images can also be used for disaster management during cyclones and floods, to assess the area inundated. RISAT-1's life-span is five years.

The government ruled out any demoralization of the ISRO scientific community following the recent action against four of its former scientists. The action has in no way affected the space programme. Giving this information in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Minister of State in PMO, V. Narayanasamy said there is no proposal at present to revoke the action taken by the government on the four former ISRO scientists
