Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has left Pretoria(Brazil) on his way back to New Delhi after participating in the G-20 Summit at Los Cabos, Mexico and Rio+20 Summit at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Rio+ 20 UN Earth Summit came to a close with leaders approving a 53-page declaration that outlines measures to tackle the world’s environmental and developmental problems. With poverty eradication as one of central themes, the declaration committed to freeing humanity from poverty and hunger as a matter of urgency. Affirmed by 193 member countries, the outcome document said that poverty eradication, changing unsustainable and promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production and protecting and managing the natural resource base of economic and social development are the overarching objectives and essential requirements for sustainable development.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a ‘Zero Hunger Challenge’ inviting all countries to work for a future where every individual has adequate nutrition and where all food systems are resilient. Launching the initiative at the summit, Mr Ban said, Zero hunger would boost economic growth, reduce poverty and safeguard the environment and will foster peace and stability.
In the declaration, global leaders renewed their commitment to sustainable development and taking a pledge to ensuring the promotion of an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future for the planet and for the present and future generations. The declaration made a pledge to make every effort to accelerate the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
On green economy, the declaration affirmed that green economy policies in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication should be consistent with international law and respect each country’s national sovereignty over their natural resources besides taking into account the needs of developing countries, particularly those in special situations.

The World Energy Forum will hold its first conference outside its UN headquarters in Dubai during October 22-24 this year.
The event will be attended by the policy makers, energy ministers , public and private sector experts, academicians and over 2500 delegates to discuss sustainable energy policies and solutions for the world.
At a press conference in Dubai, the Chairman of the forum, Prof. Harold Hyun Suk-Oh said the conference will highlight the energy and water issues related to sustainable development so as to have a cleaner, safer and sustainable energy system benefitting all. The focus will be on green economy for sustainable development.
The Executive Director of the WEF, Dinesh Kumar told that one of the key issues at the WEF meet would be the ways to enhance public private partnership and the investments in the energy sector.
He said that the conference aims to set tangible goals for the transfer of clean and green technology from the developed nations to the developing world.
The former President Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam has been invited as one of the Speakers at the Conference. The theme of the conference this year is World Energy Forum 2012-A forum for World Leaders.
The conference assumes significance in the wake of the fact that United Nations has designated 2012 as the year of sustainable development.

Curtains come down on the Rio + 20 Summit this evening with the global leaders renewing their commitment to sustainable development and taking a pledge to ensuring the promotion of an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future for the planet and for the present and future generations.
The out come document of the summit says, the leaders committed to freeing humanity from poverty and hunger as a matter of urgency. The document affirmed by 193 member countries said poverty eradication, changing unsustainable and promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production and protecting and managing the natural resource base of economic and social development are the overarching objectives and essential requirements for sustainable development.
Earlier addressing the summit, UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon urged global leaders in working for a future without hunger. Bringing into focus poverty eradication , Ban ki moon said in a world of plenty, no-one, not a single person, should go hungry. The leaders made a pledge to make every effort to accelerate the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
Acknowledging that people are at the centre of sustainable development , the document said member countries would strive for a world that is just, equitable and inclusive,and commited to work together to promote sustained and inclusive economic growth, social development and environmental protection to benefit all It also dealt with the subjects of food security, water, energy, sustainable cosumption and green jobs, as well as social issues such as gender and generational equality and parity among developed and developing countries.

He urged the industrialized countries to make additional finance and technology available to developing countries to reduce carbon emissions which has not been the case so far. Describing economic development, social inclusion and environmental sustainability as critical components of the sustainable development, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the task before the world community is to give practical shape and content to achieve inculsive growth. The Prime Minister said each country should be free to have its devolpment agenda according to its national priorities and circumstances. He observed that the present economic crisis has made the situation worse.

On the sidelines of the summit Dr. Singh held talks with the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksha and urged him to take immediate steps to ensure that Tamils lead a normal life with dignity in the island nation. He also met the Nepalese counterpart, Baburam Bhattarai and reiterated India's keenness for success of democracy in the Himalayan state.

ew Delhi says that the draft declaration at Rio +20 summit fully addresses India's concern. Talking to reporters in Rio De Janeiro after participating in the discussions to finalize the draft declaration, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said that the host Brazil used a very transparent and inclusive process in finalizing the draft which won all round support.
Mrs. Natarajan asserted that the significant development during negotiations for India is a restoration of the centrality of the principle of common but differentiated responsibility in the environment discourse. The Environment Minister said the conference will be remembered for kick starting the sustained development goals.

The crucial summit on global development kicks off later today in a fresh bid to rally the world behind a common environmental blueprint amid economic woes and discord. As calls go out to world leaders to commit to reaching an accord that addresses the most pressing environment and social woes, Dr. Manmohan Singh will pitch for the principle of common but differentiated responsibility during the meeting.

Prime Minister said there was general agreement among leaders of G-20 nations that policy in all countries must shift to strengthenging growth and the most urgent problem that must be tackled is to reduce uncertainty in the Euro zone. He said the G20 countires have responded to the need to enhance the resources of IMF to enable it to play its role in the current situation. On India's contributing 10 billion dollars to the IMF, the Dr Singh said it reflects the recognition that as a responsible player in the global community India has to play its part.

PM urged G20 Countries to work for reviving sustained global growth. In his statement prior to his departure on an 8 day visit to the two countries, Dr. Manmohan Singh voiced concern over the continuing problems the euro zone and said it will further dampen global market and adversely impact economic growth.
He asserted that there is a need to revive global growth and he will focus on the development dimension in the G-20 deliberations. He said there is need to focus on investment in infrastructure as a means of stimulating growth.
The Prime Minister said this is essential as a world economy is facing the heat in the backdrop of Euro zone crisis. Dr. Singh made it clear that European leaders will have to take resolute action to resolve this crisis. The Euro crisis is affecting the global economic growth as it accounts for a major share of global economy and is also India's major trade and investment partner.
On the coordination on BRICS countries the Prime Minister said that the leaders of grouping have agreed to work with international community to ensure healthy economic recovery.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will leave New Delhi tommorrow on a week long visit to Mexico and Brazil. Dr Singh will be participating in the crucial G-20 Summit in the Pacific resort of Los Cabos and will also attend the Rio + 20 conference on Sustainable development.
Briefing newsmen in New Delhi today, the External Affairs Ministry Spokesman Mr Syed Akbarudin said the Prime Minister will have bilateral meetings with the President of Mexico Felipe Caledron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Dr Singh will also hold talks with the French President Francois Hollande on the sidelines of the G-20 summit.
He said the Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs Mr R.Gopalan , chief interlocutors of the Prime Minister are already in Mexico negotiating with member countries.
The summit begin held in the back drop of the Euro Zone crisis will deliberate on need to strengthen the financial system and foster financial inclusion to promote economic growth. Mr Akbarudin said the host country has listed 5 areas on which the G-20 countries will deliberate.
Mr Akbarudin said on the sidelines of the RIO Summit the Prime Minister will also have talks with his Nepalese counter part Baburam Bhattarai, Srilankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha besides meeting the former President of Brazil Lula da Silva.
