 The government has decided to link crime records with the Aadhaar
Unique Identity, UID project. Union Home Ministry has made a
provision for linking up the UID or Aadhaar number with crime and
criminal tracking system. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha
today, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Jitendra Singh said that
project will cost two thousand crore rupees. He said that linking
crime records with the UID will make the data base easier to handle
and more acceptable. The Minister informed that the creation of the
National Population Register, NPR is progressing as envisaged. In the
course of enrolment, if a person indicates that he or she has already
been enrolled for Aadhaar, then the biometrics data is not captured
by the NPR. He said the government is also considering issuing
Resident Identity Cards to all residents of age 18 years and above.


Unique Identification Authority of India -UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani today said the authority targeted an enrolment of 40 crore people for Adhaar Cards in next few years in the country. Addressing a press conference after a high-level meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy to review the progress of the project in Hyderabad, he said the whole country will be covered in a reasonable time.

Stating that the UIDAI has been working very closely with the Registrar General of India in this regard, he said the National Population Registry will also do enrollment of population. He further said Permanent Update Centers will be set up for carrying out corrections in Aadhaar Cards.

Andhra Pradesh is leading all the states in the country in Adhaar enrolment with 5 out of 20 crore cards generated so far.
