In the United States, cutting across party lines, a group of over 80 lawmakers has introduced a key resolution in the House of Representatives seeking for the first time documentation of hate crimes against Sikhs. They lauded the contributions of the Sikh-American community.
The resolution introduced by top Congressmen, including Joe Crowley and Howard Berman, yesterday condemned a slew of attacks against Sikhs and their religious institutions over the past year, including the August 5 gurdwara shooting at Oak Creek, Wisconsin, which killed six worshippers.
It came hours after the House passed a resolution introduced by Republican Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan condemning the Wisconsin gurdwara attack.
The new Congressional resolution gives fresh support to a
public call for the Department of Justice to begin collecting comprehensive data on hate crimes committed against Sikhs.

Minister of State for External Affairs Praneet Kaur has said that External Affairs Ministry has not received any applications for Indian citizenship or asylum from Pak Hindus who are on pilgrimage to India.
She said in Patiala, the matter comes under the subject of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Minister said the issue of granting asylum is considered on a case-to-case basis in case Ministry of External Affairs receives any such request from Pak Hindus.
She said that Ministry would consider any such cases sympathetically after studying all legal aspects of the matter. Saying that every country should safeguarded the security and rights of minorities, she said that Pakistan Government has been apprised of India’s worries.
On the recent killing of Sikhs in a US gurdwara Praneet kaur said that diplomats of both India and the US are in touch with each other and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the security of Sikhs in America.

US President Barack Obama says America is heart-broken by the killing of Sikhs in a Gurdwara there and asked his countrymen to do some soul-searching and examine ways to reduce violence.
A former US Army veteran believing in the white supremacist movement had opened fire on worshippers at a Gurdwarda in Oak Creek in Wisconsin on Sunday morning, killing six people before he was shot dead.
Obama said if it turned out, as some early reports indicate, that it might have been motivated in some way by the ethnicity of the worshippers, the American people immediately recoil against that kind of attitude. rampage(हिंसात्मक व्यवहार )
President Obama said it would be very important for the Americans to reaffirm that regardless of looks, origin and beliefs, they were all one people and look after one another and respect one another.
The US has witnessed a number of such shooting incidents and the latest carnage(हत्याकांड ) came even as the nation was still reeling from a mass shooting two weeks ago in which a gunman killed 12 people in a theatre in Colorado.
Meanwhile, a candle light vigil marked the closure of the funeral ceremony. US officials including James Santelle, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, joined the funeral.
Earlier, India sought assurance from the US over the safety of the Indian community living in that country. External Affairs Minister SM Krishna spoke to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regarding the shooting incident at a Wisconsin Gurdwara that left seven people dead.
Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, Krishna said he had requested strengthening of security at places of worship during a telephonic conversation with Clinton, who is currently in South Africa. He said an assurance to the Indian community had to come out from the Obama administration that their interests were going to be safe. Krishna said on both accounts, he found Secretary Clinton more than willing to do it.
Krishna said the FBI had already swung into action and Clinton was waiting for the preliminary report. He said the Government would be given the report as soon as she get it.
The Minister said India’s Ambassador to the US Nirupama Rao was also in touch with the White House and the State Department

Indian-American students have swept the prestigious National Geographic Bee in United States, bagging the top four positions of this year's tough national competition. The difference this year was the particpation by US President Barack Obama, who played a quizmaster
in this National quiz contest .
In the competiton, 14 years old Rahul
Nagvekar from Texas bagged the first position, by beating 13-year-old Vansh Jain from Wisconsin at the finals of the annual competition held yesterday.
Both are class eighth students. The third and fourth positions went to Varun Mahadevan from San Francisco and Raghav Ranga from Arizona respectively.
An official release said, Rahul Nagvekar
has won a 25,000 US dollars college scholarship,lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip for two to the Galapagos on an expedition aboard the National Geographic Endeavour.US President
Barack Obama asked one question this year via video, quizzing the young contenders on their knowledge of recent events.
Obama asked which Asian capital city on the Han River hosted a gathering of world leaders in March for a Nuclear Security Summit. The answer to which
was "Seoul". Thw US President said that studying geography is about more than just memorising places on a map.
