Union Power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has constituted a three-member panel which will look into the failure of the Northern Grid. The failure led to power outages throughout the region. Talking to media persons in New Delhi a shortwhile ago, he said 60 percent of power including essential supply has been restored and full supply will be restored soon.
The electricity supply to the northern states of, Har Delhi, Punjabyana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir were disrupted for a couple of hours begining 2.30 a.m.

The Minister said, the panel will be headed by Central Electricity Authority Chairperson A S Bakshi. It will submit its report in 15 days. The other members of panel are Power Grid Corporation Chairman and Managing Director A M Nayak and Power System Operation Corporation Chief Executive Officer S K Soonee.
Mr Shinde said an additional 8,000 MW hydro power, including from Bhutan, is being taken to meet demand. He added that the northern region is getting power from the Eastern and Western grids also. He said it is the first power grid failure during the last ten years. He said, measures are being taken to prevent these type of faults. These include inter connectivity of different power grid zones in the country by 2014.
Our correspondent reports that the Northern Grid, which caters to about 28 per cent of the country's population, covers nine regions -- Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh.

The Delhi government has decided to convert the shelter homes, constructed last year to provide roof to homeless people in winter, into all-weather accommodation.
CEO of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Chetan Sanghi said, in the first phase, 30 homes out of 150 will be upgraded by next month so that homeless people can stay there throughout the year.
He said, work on improving the shelter homes has already started and all of them are expected to be ready by June 15. The CEO said, apart from upgrading existing homes, a number of new facilities will be built for accommodating homeless children, women, physically challenged and people affected by substance abuse.
He said government has decided to provide electricity and water connections to all shelter homes. The possibility of providing health and educational facilities to the occupants of shelter homes is also being explored.
