In an initiative to spread awareness among public about counterfeit notes, the Reserve Bank of India has launched a website explaining ways to detect fake and counterfeit notes.

The website www.paisaboltahai.rbi.org.in provides a visual presentation on ways to identify counterfeit notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 rupee denominations. Website visitors also have an option to download posters of these currency notes, which can be used to identify counterfeit notes.

RBI has also made a downloadable documentary film available on the website on ways to identify counterfeit notes.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the government is taking steps to arrest volatility in the foreign exchange market and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will intervene when necessary. Mr. Mukherjee said, as and when RBI will consider necessary they will intervene. He said, it depends on the market forces and the market forces are uncertain.

The Indian rupee slid to a fresh low of Rs 55.32 against the US dollar in the afternoon trade today as foreign funds pulled out from emerging markets avoiding risky assets. The rupee has been one of the worst performing currencies in Asia and has been consistently hitting lows in the last fortnight.

The rupee has lost over 22 per cent since the beginning of the year. To check the sliding rupee, RBI has taken a slew of policy steps to increase dollar flows, including relaxing interest rates caps on non-resident deposits. It had also asked exporters to convert half of their foreign currency earnings into rupee.

At the forex market, the domestic currency has been falling against the US dollar over the past few days. 

Dealers said strong dollar demand from importers, mainly oil refiners, on expectation of further strengthening of the dollar, caused the rupee's fall. However, the Reserve Bank had stepped in and stemmed the rupee's slide.

he government has initiated several measures to tackle the menace of Fake Indian Currency notes (FICN). In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State for Finance, S.S. Palanimanikkam said, several agencies under the Ministries of Finance and Home Affairs, Security and intelligence agencies of the Centre and States and also the CBI are working in tandem to thwart the illegal activities related to fake Indian currency. He said, a special FICN coordination Group has been formed in the Home Ministry to share intelligence and information on the subject among different security agencies of the Centre and the States. He said, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also been empowered to investigate and prosecute such offences. The Minister said, the Government has also constituted a Terror funding and Fake Currency Cell in NIA to focus on investigation
of such cases. He said, the RBI has also strengthened the mechanism for detection of counterfeit notes by the Banks. The minister informed the house that fake indian currency worth more than 19.32 crore rupees had come to light in 2010-11 as against 10.37 crore rupees in 2009-10.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said the open Indo-Nepal border is emerging as a possible ingress point for anti-national elements because of strict vigil on the country's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Speaking at the Internal Security conference of Chief Ministers here, the newly-elected UP chief minister said the 550km-long border with the state requires special policing arrangement to put a check on any possible anti-national activity. Mr. Yadav also demanded an eight fold hike for funds allocated to the state for the modernisation of police from the current 100 crore rupees to 800 crore rupees.
He also demanded 5,000 crore rupees central help for improving the strength of state police. The Chief Minister said the state requires help in advanced non-lethal weapons systems to control riot-like situations. Expressing concern over the growing menace of fake currency, Mr Yadav demanded setting up of a special laboratory in Lucknow or Kanpur to identify such notes.
