The Armed Forces Flag Day is being observed today. The day reinforces solidarity with the Armed forces for all that they do for the nation in the performance of their onerous duties. It is also marked by contribution to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund to honour the brave and martyrs for their supreme sacrifice. Our correspondent reports that it is an occasion for the people of the entire country to show their respect and admiration to existing and ex servicemen of Armed Forces and recognize those who lost their lives battling for the nation.

The Navy today successfully test-fired the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, capable of carrying a conventional warhead of 300 kg, from a warship off the Goa coast. According to Defence sources, the missile, performing high-level manoeuvres successfully hit the target ship. The INS Teg, which has been built at the Yantar shipyard in Russia, had fired the missile successfully during pre-induction trials in Russia last year. The two remaining warships of the project namely INS Tarkash and INS Trikand will also be armed with the lethal missile in vertical launch mode.The two-stage missile, the first one being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant, has already been inducted into the Army and Navy, and the Air Force version is in final stage of trial.

The Environment Ministry has rejected the Navy's proposal to set up a missile testing site in Andaman and Nicobar islands, saying the firing range would destroy the habitat of endangered birds in Nicobar Megapode. Talking to reporters in New Delhi on the sidelines of a function, Environment minister Jayanthi Natrajan said the missile firing range should not come up at Tillanchong Sanctuary area.
The minister said it was a difficult decision for her to reject the proposal for setting up a temporary facility at the ecologically sensitive island. She said it also involves security as the missile range is important for the country's defence.

Seventy five per cent of the Air Force will be highly modernised by 2022. Addressing the media in New Delhi today, the Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne said that by the end of the 13th plan, about one lakh, fifty thousand crore rupees will be spent on the modernisation plan. He said that acquisition process of 126 Medium Multiple Role Aircraft, MMRA, is well on track and by the end of this fiscal, it will be finalised.
On Sukhoi 30 upgrade and acquisition, he said that 270 aircraft are to be acquired for 13 to 14 squadrons to be raised. Air Chief informed that by December 10th, the squadron will be raised in Punjab which will be operational by the middle of next year. He said that the aircraft is also being upgraded as per the requirement of the Force.

he government has ruled out withdrawal of the camel fleet from the Border Security Force, BSF. Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today that BSF's camel fleet has proved effective in border patrolling in the Rann of Kutch and the desert areas of the border belt in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The number of camels in BSF is 1276 and each one of them has been provided with handlers for patrolling the Western border, he said.
South Korea and the United States today completed an annual joint military drill denounced by North Korea as a rehearsal for war. In a statement, the Combined Forces Command said, the computer-assisted simulation exercise, named Ulchi Freedom Guardian, was successfully finished after kicking off on August 20. The Forces commander, General James D. Thurman, said it allowed the two countries to evaluate and improve joint air coordination procedures, plans and systems including Combined Space Operations using satellites.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI today registered a case against arms dealer Abhishek Verma under Official Secrets Act, OSA. CBI spokesperson told AIR that a case has been registered in the special court against Verma and unkwown government officials after a formal complaint was received from the Defence Ministry, stating that documents purportedly provided by US-based attorney C Edmond Allen, Verma's business associate, were classified and violated OSA.
The CBI will now question senior defence ministry officials and retired defence personnel who are under theagency's scanner for their alleged relations with Verma and other arms supplier lobbyists.

n Nepal , the Supreme Court has issued a stay order on the ongoing recruitment process for Army officers.
A single bench of Justice Tahir Ali Ansari issued the interim order yesterday which effectively bars the Nepal Army to conduct any further exams for Army officer candidates who passed written exams recently.
The Apex court issued the order in response to a writ petition filed by Rakesh Yadav against the publication of result of written exams for officer level in the Army on July 25.
In the petition, he argued that Nepal Army conducted the exams only for candidates under the open category but not for those under inclusive category.

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir and the Secretary, Ministry of Defence over alleged killing of a person in an encounter by the Army. The Commission has sought reports within four weeks on a complaint that one Hilal Ahmed Dar was allegedly killed in an encounter between the Army and terrorists in Bandipora district of the state.
Quoting a media report on the encounter, the Commission observed that the allegations, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the deceased.

The Prime Minister has warned that India cannot afford to rest on technological advancements as there is net deterioration in the international strategic and security environment.Dr. Manmohan Singh asserted that the political uncertainties in the immediate and extended neighbourhood, civil strife and turmoil in West Asia, terrorism and threats to cyber security present complex challenges that require both conventional as well as technological responses. Giving away the DRDO awards for the year 2011-12 in New Delhi today, Dr. Manmohan Singh re-iteratd that government is fully committed to modernise country's armed forces and provide them with whatever they need to secure the frontiers.
Expressing concern hat the share of indigenous content in defence procurement continues to be low ,Dr.Singh said that there is a need to deliver projects within reasonable time and cost. Emphasising that the country has to have its own domestic defence industry the Prime Minister said that both public and private sectors, have to come to a level where they can compete with global players.
Lauding the role of DRDO in critical innovations, the Prime Minister suggested that steps have to be taken for better partnership between public and private entrepreneurs in defence production. He said, the challenge now is to create greater incentives for domestic industry to develop capabilities for system integration, which at present only a few companies have. He said that the domestic industry need a boost to quicken the pace of development.
The Prime Minister informed that the Government is currently examining the Naresh Chandra Committee Report, which has also made a number of important recommendations with regard to defence procurement. It calls for a long term policy for increasing indigenization of defence production and high tech industries in consultation and collaboration with the private sector. A committee led by Ravindra Gupta is looking into this specific aspect.
On the Rama Rao Review Committee Report on Redefining DRDO , Dr. Singh that the current bureaucratic system of administering scientific and technical departments have to be changed to inspire young scientists to participate enthusiastically in the task of building India into a scientific and technological powerhouse.

n Jammu and Kashmir, the operation to dig open the 280-meter long tunnel, which was discovered yesterday along the Indo-Pak Border in Samba district, is in full swing. A team of senior officials from New Delhi will be visiting the spot soon. BSF troops are using more dozers and men to find out the origin of the tunnel towards the Indo-Pak border.

Tejinder Singh. All the five accused were granted bail by Metropolitan Magistrate Jay Thareja on a personal bond of 20,000 rupees each.
In his complaint, Lt. Gen. (retd.) Tejinder Singh has accused them of misusing their official position, power and authority to level false charges against him.
Tejinder Singh had filed the complaint alleging that he was defamed by the Army through its press release issued on March 5, which accused him of offering a bribe of 14 crore rupees to the erstwhile Army Chief to clear a deal of 600 trucks.
India and Russia have agreed to accelerate their efforts to achieve the 20 billion US Dollars trade target by 2015. The bilateral trade between the countries stood at 9 billion U S Dollars in 2011. Addressing a joint press conference with the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said the trade figures for the first quarter of this year are encouraging but more efforts are need to be done. He said, during the Inter Governmental Commission meet, the focus was on economic aspects of relationship between the two contries.
Mr Krishna said, besides discussion on strategic sectors, both the sides also reviewed progress on some initiatives undertaken after Annual Summit in 2011 at Moscow. These include the joint drive to harness the benefits of modernisation and industrial cooperation by pooling in the vast human and scientific resources of the two countries. The External Affairs Minister said the first meeting of Joint Working Group set up in this connection will take place shortly.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister said that both the sides can cooperate in the field of knowledge, air and space technologies. Both countries can produce combat air crafts, multitask interceptors and helicoptors. The Russian leader asserted for more business to business contacts. He also advocated for easy VISA regime to enhance trade between the two countries.

Chief of the Indian Army, General Bikram Singh was today given the guard of honour on his arrival on a five day official visit to Nepal. General Singh is leading a five member team and has come at the invitation of his Nepalese counterpart General Chhatrraman Singh Gurung. This is his first foreign visit after taking over as Chief of the Army.
The General will also be conferred with the Honorary rank of General of the Nepalese Army by the President of Nepal during the Investiture Ceremony at Sheetal Niwas in Kathmandu tomorrow.
Chief of the Army, General Bikram Singh on his arrival today laid a wreath at the Brave memorial at the Army pavilion in Tundikhel in the capital and later called on his counterpart at the Army headquarters where they discussed on various bilateral issues. He also met with the Principle staff officers and received a briefing on the current status of Nepal.
General Singh will receive the title of Honorary General of Nepal Army from President Ram Baran Yadav , a tradition between Army chiefs . During his five day visit General Singh visit the Nepal Army’s training centres and institutions such as High Altitude training centre at Jomsom along Nepal-China border, Birendra Peace Keeping institution in Panchkhal, and Indian Army’s pension camp in Pokhara where he will address an ex-service men rally . He is to also address the ‘commanders’ undergoing training at the Army Institute at Tokha, and visit the office of Western Brigade of the Nepal Army.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Indo-Pak Flag meeting was held at Chakkan -Da- Bagh in border district of Poonch on Saturday. Defence Spokesman, Col. R K Palta said for the last 5 days Pakistan Army was continuously refusing to attend the meeting, despite repeated messages from Indian Army on hotline. He, however, said the brigadier level flag meeting was held on Saturday in a cordial and conducive atmosphere.
The meeting comes in the backdrop of Pakistani Rangers continuously violating cease fire on the Line of Control in Krishna Ghati sector. Two jawans were killed and four others injured in firing by Pakistan troops, in four ceasefire violations since June 11 to June 16.The Army had sent hotline messages to the Pakistan army thrice seeking a flag-meeting to discuss the increasing incidents of ceasefire

The Ministry of Defence has cleared a 12,000-crore rupee proposal of the Indian Army to procure new generation air defence missiles to replace its ageing Russian systems. It has also cleared the purchase of an additional 14 Dornier aircraft for the transport wing of the Indian Air Force at a cost of over 1,000 crore rupee.
The additional Dornier transport aircraft will boost its fleet level up from the current 41. The aircraft used in light transport or personnel carrier roles - will be procured from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
The Defence Acquisition Council also approved the procurement of eight regiments of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missiles to replace the Russian Kvadrat systems that have become obsolete. The Army will float a global tender to purchase the systems.
