Today is Mujahideen Victory Day in Afghanistan. It commemorates the overthrow of the Soviet supported communist government in Afghanistan in 1992. Although the Soviet army retreated from Afghanistan in 1989 but the communist government remained in power till 1992 when it was overthrown by Mujahideens on this day 20 years ago.

Mujahedeen Victory Day is a holiday in Afghanistan, although today being Friday it is weekend holiday. In view of threats of insurgent attacks strict vigil is being observed throughout the country.
