The recently completed wreck removal work at the Kankasanthurai (KKS) harbor was witnessed by the 12 member Indian Parliamentary delegation. The harbor authorities briefed the delegation on the process of the work. The KKS harbor is being rehabilitated with the help of Indian assistance, worth 22 million US Dollar. The dredging , breakwater and pier construction work of the harbor is to commence soon.
The Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha informed the Parliamentary delegation that the port is likely to get functional by the end of the year, which will help in ‘facilitating closer commercial links’ between south India and Sri Lanka. The detailed hydrographic survey in the fifth phase will be done by both the Indian and Sri Lankan Navy for which India will grant a concessional line of credit. The entire KKS harbor rehabilitation work is likely to be completed by 2013-14 , added Mr Kantha. At Jaffna, the Governor of the Northern Province, GA Chandrasiri made a multi media presentation on the road map of the development process of the war ravaged north.
The 12 member parliamentary delegation, led by the opposition leader Sushma Swaraj today got a detailed briefing on the rehabilitation work of the KKS harbor near Jaffna, which is being done with India’s assistance. The members also saw the removed ship wrecks on the site. The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka Mr Ashok K Kantha informed the delegation that the harbor is likely to get functional by year end , which will help facilitate closer commercial links between south India and Sri Lanka. In Jaffna the delegation was briefed on the road map of the development process of the war ravaged North by the Sri Lankan authorities. The Fishermen’s Association of Jaffna also handed a memorandum to the visiting delegation. The fishermen associations of both the countries are already in touch on the fisheries issue to work out a common solution. |
