he UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon is expected to meet today Lakdhar Brahimi, the newly-appointed UN-Arab League joint special representative for Syria. Ban Ki Moon’s spokesperson Martin Nesirky said that Brahimi will be holding consultations with several dignitaries in New York over a week. Meanwhile, Syria has welcomed the new UN envoy and said it is ready to work with Brahimi. Our West Asia Correspondent reports that as the fighting continues to rage between the Government troops and rebels in parts of Syria, the new UN Special representative Lakhdar Brahimi embarks on a new mission to search for an elusive peace in the country. His meeting with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will give an idea of his new mandate. Brahimi has said that the task is difficult but not impossible with the support of all concerned. The veteran Algerian diplomat replaces Kofi Annan from August 31 onwards. Annan resigned citing lack of support from the Syrian Government, opposition and a divided UN Security Council. The international community has declared full support to Brahimi. The Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Muqdad told in Damascus that Syria is ready to cooperate with new U.N. envoy and hoped that the veteran Algerian diplomat would help kick-start a process of national dialogue. Brahimi has been a UN envoy in Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon. His vast experience in the Arab world is expected to come handy in finding a solution to the conflict in Syria
