Sudan and South Sudan have reached a reasonable deal over oil. After the breakthrough in their talks in Ethiopia, Sudanese officials said in Khartoum today that other disputes are also expected to be resolved. Undersecretary at the ministry of petroleum,Awad Abdul Fatah, told the official SUNA news agency that they have reached a final agreement with South Sudan on oil transit and they expect to settle other disputes by negotiation.
Earlier today, African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki announced the agreement in Addis Ababa. The announcment came two days after the expiry of a UN Security Council deadline for the two to settle crucial differences after border fighting in April raised fears of wider war in April.
Sudan had been seeking up to 36 dollars a barrel in fees. But a position paper released on Thursday said it was proposing 22.20 dollars compared to 7.61 offered by South Sudan.
Oil has been at the heart of tensions and economic difficulties for Sudan and South Sudan since the South separated in July 2011. South Sudan produces about 75 per cent of Sudanese oil worth billions of dollars. But, the landlocked South depends on the north's pipeline and port to export its crude.
