In Syria, the opposition activists reported that Syrian troops have stormed the Barzeh district of Damascus to evict the rebel fighters. They claimed that helicopters fired rockets into a neighborhood near the southern Sayida Zeinab district .Syrian troops also pushed into a rebel-held district in Aleppo on Saturday to flush out the rebels. Fighting has been reported in Salaheddin and Sakhur districts .
The rebels are reported to have claimed a second border outpost with Turkey. Amateur video by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights showed armed men carrying the flag of the Syrian uprising at the Al-Salama border crossing. The crossing faces the southern Turkish border post of Oncupinar in the southern Kilis province.
Rebel forces gained control of the Bab al-Hawa crossing between Syria and Turkey on Thursday. But by Saturday a group of foreign fighters calling themselves as Islamists took control of the Bab al-Hawa post, with some of them claiming to be members of Al Qaeda in Maghreb. The rebels are reported to have captured three border crossings with Iraq and Turkey and another one at Yarubiya in Syria’s Kurdish northeast.
The International Committee of Red Cross issued a statement in Geneva saying that the people in Damascus continue to search desperately for safety. It said the humanitarian needs are growing as the situation in the city worsens and large numbers of people flee their neighborhoods in search of safe haven.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has sent the UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous to Syria to assess the situation. Ban said he was deeply distressed by the rising death toll . He warned that the limited extension of the U.N. mission showed the onus is above all on the parties, with the Syrian government in the first place to stop the killings.
