China has launched its largest and most advanced patrol vessel as part of its efforts to assert marine sovereignty amid escalating disputes with neighbouring countries over a host of islands in the South China Sea.

The new vessel, Haixun 01 was launched from Wuhan, Hubei province, last weekend. The new flagship is the first patrol vessel capable of completing both maritime surveillance and rescue missions, the Shanghai Maritime Bureau said.

State-run China Daily reported today, it is part of the stepped up efforts by China to protect its marine sovereignty and enhance rescue efficiency on its coastal waters. The 5,418-ton ship can also tow ships and put out fires on other boats.
