Russia today warned that foreign intervention in the crisis in Syria would be more catastrophic than in Libya. After meeting Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdesslem in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said told a joint press conference that both Russia and Tunis rejected coercive solutions in Syria.

Lavrov stressed outside powers should not dictate to Syrians but push all parties to stop the violence in the country. He said U.N.-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan's plan for a Syrian-led political transition was necessary to stabilize the situation. The minister said only the Syrian people could decide the structure and the mechanism of the transitional period.

Meanwhile, Lavrov reiterated that Iran should participate in an international conference on Syria scheduled in Geneva on June 30, which Lavrov will also attend.
