Myanmar has deployed army units in the west of the country after at least four people were killed in continuing sectarian violence there. Reports from the state of Rakhine said the victims were Buddhists who died during a riot by members of Myanmar's Muslim minority. According to the website of Myanmar's President, 19 shops, 386 houses and a hotel were burnt to the ground. Four men and a woman were knifed to death.
This violence appears to be in retaliation for a series of incidents last week following the rape and murder of Buddhist women. Ten Muslim men were dragged off a bus and beaten to death by an angry mob.
