Air crew and passengers today foiled the attempted hijacking of an aircraft with 100 people on board in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. At least ten people were injured. According to security officials, six people allegedly tried to hijack Tianjin Airlines' Flight GS 7554 just 10 minutes after it took off from the Hotan Airport at 12:25 pm local time and en route to the regional capital Urumqi, about 1,400 km away.

Police said two flight policemen were seriously injured while head attendant and seven passengers were slightly injured in the fight with hijackers. The plane then flew back and safely landed on the Hotan Airport. The six suspects are now in police custody. Further investigation is underway. Police have not revealed whether the hijackers had firearms or weapons on board.
