In Egypt, Muslim Brotherhood has claimed that its candidate Mohammad Morsey leads the vote tally at the end of counting of over 90 percent of votes for the Presidential elections. The Islamist group also said Morsey will now take on the former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq in the run off elections .
The Muslim Brotherhood posted on its website today that there will be a run-off between Mohammed Morey and Ahmed Shafiq, after 90% of the votes were counted nationwide.
Earlier in the day Muslim Brotherhood and local media sources reported that with votes counted from about 12,800 of the roughly 13,100 polling stations, Morsey has bagged 25 percent while Ahmed Shafiq got 23 percent votes. It said Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh bagged 20 percent while the leftist Hamdeen Sabahi got 19 percent votes.
If the reported figures come true, then it indicates a possible run off or the second round of voting between Mohammad Morsey and Ahmed Shafiq on June 16 and 17. According to Egyptian electoral law in case no candidate is able to secure more than 50 percent of votes; run off voting will take place between the top two vote getters.
However the official results of the first round are expected only by Tuesday. The final results will be out on June 21 as to who would be the next President of Egypt. |
