The West Bengal Government has decided to adopt Urdu as one of the official languages in the state. A bill to this effect was passed in the State Assembly on Monday.
Under the provisions of the bill, Urdu will be treated as official language in certain districts where the population of Urdu speaking people exceeds 10 percent as a whole or part of district like Sub-Division and Block.
Moving the West Bengal official language amendment bill, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr. Partha Chatterjee said that, Urdu language will be used as official language in the state in addition to Bengali and Nepali.
Chief Minister Miss Mamata Banerjee said that, the Government is also considering to accord Santhali and Gurumukhi languages as official language in the state. |
