Sri Lanka has said that bilateral discussions between India and Sri Lanka have been continuing over the nuclear safety issue and appropriate steps will be taken within the framework of the guidelines provided. Speaking to AIR on phone, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Prasad Kariyawasam has said that the technical level bilateral discussion on the issue will commence soon and if Sri Lanka is assured of the safety aspect, the need to go to any other international forum will not arise. Mr. Kariyawasam also said that concerns for nuclear safety were discussed in the bilateral forum.
o said that concerns related to the nuclear safety have been taken up bilaterally and if the concerns are satisfied bilaterally , there is no need for Sri Lanka to go to any other forum.
Mr.Kariyawasam also said that because of the protests in Kudankulam people in Sri Lanka too had become aware of the issue and there are natural concerns for safety. He also said that it is a separate subject and is unfair to link it to any other issue. Prem Kumar Gunaratnam , who holds a dual citizenship of Australia and Sri Lanka was deported to Australia today early morning for breach of Sri Lankan Immigration laws.
