The Pakistan's Supreme Court has found Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani guilty in a contempt of court case. However, the court gave Mr. Gilani only a symbolic sentence and he will not have to serve any time in jail.
Mr. Gilani who arrived in Supreme Court this morning has also denied that he has been in contempt for failing to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Mr. Gilani has argued that the President has immunity as head of state. President Zardari is accused of using Swiss bank accounts to launder bribe money.
He said the charges are politically motivated. The three-month trial ended today when defence and prosecution counsels concluded their arguments.
Renowned analyst Najam Sethi, while commenting on the aftermath of the Supreme Court said the verdict will increase political turmoil in the country.
Federal Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan said that Prime Minister Gilani will file an appeal against the the Supreme Court verdict.
Speaking to media Ms. Awan said that punishment was being given to those who have made the constitution. She said Prime Minister will chair a cabinet meeting today. |
