Nepal’s Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that Nepal lies on the frontline of climate change and ranks among the world’s five most vulnerable countries. Addressing a session on the International Conference on Mountain countries today in Kathmandu, he underlined the need of identifying the root cause of climate change for minimizing the damage caused by the changing weather patterns. He stressed on the need of additional financial resources and capacity building for the sustainable development of the mountain regions.
Director General of the Energy Research Institute of India some five million people in South Asia are at high risk of climate change and there was the need of holding discussions at the intellectual and political levels for reducing the risk of climate change.
Qatari Minister for Environmenti said that climate change is one of the most urgent challenges to be tackled by the international community, and that it was important to facilitate negotiations in a constructive and collaborative manner.
The two day International Conference of mountain Countries on Climate change has been organized by Government of Nepal, Ministry of Environment with an effort to bring mountain countries together as they face similar problems brought about by climate change. It was to bring together to share their experiences and try to bring focus to the mountainous countries which cover twenty-five per cent of earth’s land surface and thirteen per cent of world population resides.
About seventy representatives from about thirty countries and representatives of various organizations national and international organizations took part in the conference. The fragility of the mountains can be noticed as with the fact that Nepal which is ranked as the fourth most climate vulnerable in the world only release 0.025 percent of global carbon emission .
