Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is to travel abroad for the first time in 24 years. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry said she was expected to visit the country in June. A spokesman from her party also told Reuters that she will visit the UK. The National League for Democracy spokesman said exact dates of her travel have not been confirmed.

The British Prime Minister David Cameron extended an invitation to Ms Suu Kyi to visit the UK when he met her last week in Myanmar. The Nobel laureate has spent years under house arrest . But since polls in 2010 the new civilian government has embarked on a process of reform. She has previously refused to leave the country for fear that she will not be allowed to return. Ms Suu Kyi was elected to parliament in a by-election on 1st of April which saw her party win 43 out of the 45 seats it contested.
