In Nepal, the Rashtriya Janamukti Party has withdrawn the three day Nepal bandh call following talks with the government in Kathmandu today. The party agreed to withdraw all its protest programs after reaching a six-point deal with the government talks team headed by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction, Satya Pahadi.
The shutdown had little effect on normal life in the capital, with private and public vehicles plying on the road and businesses running almost normal. The bandh had been called to demand ethnicity-based federalism. Unlike the capital, the strike had affected normal life in various districts.
The Rashtriya Janamukti party led by Minister for Labour and Transport Malwar Singh Thapa had called a nationwide shutdown , but it did not affect Kathmandu valley while transportation, academic and industrial institutions and marketplaces remained shut in major towns across the country, including Baglung, Dhangadi, Bharatpur and Hetauda.
Extra security measures were employed in the capital and other parts of country to prevent any untoward incident. The party called off strike after the government agreed to address its six point demands including timely promulgation of the constitution, implementation of secularism and constitution with federalism based on identity among others. The government has also agreed to release Janamukti Party cadres immediately who were arrested while enforcing bandh.
