In Bangladesh, the first day of the two day dawn to dusk countrywide strike called by the main opposition party the BNP witnessed incidents of crude cocktail bomb explosions and vandalism in capital Dhaka.

The BNP led18 party alliance has called for the strike over the issue of missing party leader M Ilias Ali.

Hundreds of policemen in riot gear and teams of the elite Rapid Action Battalion are patrolling the streets in Dhaka to avert any untoward incidents. Very few vehicles are plying on the roads, and long distance bus services have been suspended.

Train and River launch services are normal. Almost all educational institutions, business establishments and shops remained closed while government offices remain opened.

Ilias Ali who is a former MP and one of the BNP's organizing Secretaries and Sylhet district unit chief of the party has been missing along with his car driver from the night of 17th of this month.

Security agencies have been engaged in serious efforts to trace the missing leader with raids being conducted in different places around Dhaka city, but failed to trace him and his car driver so far.
