The African Union today called for the immediate release of Malian personalities, saying they were detained arbitrarily. The AU said it has continued to follow closely the developments in Mali, and condemned the arrest of the personalities. Jean Ping, chairperson of the AU Commission, expressed deep concern with the recent arrest of several Malian political and military personalities.
He demanded the immediate release of the detainees and respect for their physical integrity and dignity. The chairperson said these acts, at this critical juncture in the history of Mali, contribute to the maintenance of an atmosphere detrimental to the process for the effective return to constitutional order.
The arrest of former government officials came after the junta signed a Framework Agreement on April 6 to hand over power, after taking over in a coup on March 22.
