Japan on Wednesday said it would send three observers to monitor Myanmar's upcoming election, adding that it expected the vote to be free and fair. A statement from Tokyo said upon invitation from the government of Myanmar, the government of Japan has decided to dispatch the monitors and expects the by-election to be held freely and fairly.
Myanmar's government said last week it would invite observers for the April 1 vote, in which democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi is seeking a seat for the first time. The United States and Australia have already said they will be sending monitors.
