The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2012 has received Parliament's approval with the Rajya Sabha adopting it today. The Lok Sabha had passed it earlier. It seeks to amend the Constitution to include Medara community in the list of Scheduled Tribes in Karnataka.
Replying to the discussion in the Upper House, Tribal Affairs Minister V Kishore Chandra Deo said the Medara community was omitted in the list 2002. Referring to members demand for inclusion of several communities in Scheduled Tribes list, Mr Deo said the procedure followed is that the state government concerned should recommend such cases.
On a specific demand for preparation of a comprehensive list of Scheduled Tribes across the country, the Minister said it was practically not possible as it would cause further delay.
